SUMMARY:Blue Friday
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with United by Blue and the Inland Ocean Coalition Washington DC’s Chapter\, we invite you to Blue Friday! Blue Friday is a DIY Cleanup Campaign to encourage everyone to participate in a trash clean-up. \n\nWhen: November 27\, 2020 for one hour at any time\nWhere: Anywhere! You can clean-up your backyard\, your neighborhood\, hiking trails\, etc.\nWhy: Join in a collective impact environmental action to focus on sustainability rather than consumerism.\nWho: Anyone!\nHow: Bring a trash bag\, gloves\, and a buddy and fill out this data card while you clean. The clean-up should last one full hour. Post a photo to your social media channels and tag @UnitedbyBlue\, @DCChapterIOC\, and @SurfriderDC so we can repost you!\n\nPlease register for the event at this link and send your photos to DCOceanCoalition@gmail.com.  \nHere are some tips to carry out a safe solo clean-up: \nData Collection: \n\nUse this online data form.\nTo weigh your trash and recycling at the end of the clean-up\, use a hand scale\, bathroom scale\, or estimate.\n\nSeparate and Dispose Waste Properly: \n\nFamiliarize yourself with what is recyclable in your area\nUse separate bags for recycling and trash\nDispose of waste at home – you may be fined for dumping trash in public waste bins\nRecycling cannot be disposed of in a plastic bag. Empty your collection bag of recycling into the recycling bin.\n\nHealth and Safety:  \n\nCleanups should occur individually or in small groups as allowed by local COVID-19 regulations. \nWear a face mask at all times and stay socially-distanced. \nWear thick gloves and closed-toe shoes at all times when cleaning up. \nSelect a cleanup location that is permitted within their local COVID-19 guidelines. Outdoor areas where people can spread out are recommended. \nDo not touch “sharps” when cleaning up (broken glass\, needles\, etc.). \nBe aware of your surroundings and personal capabilities when cleaning in natural areas\, along water\, or in neighborhoods.\n\nIf you have additional questions\, you can read our blog on Resources for a Successful Solo Clean-Up and/or email Megan at cleanup@dc.surfrider.org.

SUMMARY:Chapter Meeting Feb 3 - On Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our next virtual chapter meeting on February 3\, 2020. \n\nWhere: Zoom\, please register here\nWhen: February 3\, 6:30-7:30pm\nWhy: Members of the Anacostia Watershed Community Advisory Committee will be joining us to tell Surfrider DC members how they can get involved to support the redevelopment of the Kenilworth Park Landfill Site.\n\nThis site is an area of about 130 acres located right on the border of the Anacostia River. For almost 30 years\, this tract of land located in DC’s 7th ward was an open-burn landfill site. The harmful smoke it produced would make its way to the communities that surrounded it\, a population mainly made up of BIPOC. The National Park System is working to restore this area and your voice matters! Read more.\n\n\nWho: Anyone can join!
